What is Planning? Planners in Your Community
Do you ever wonder what planners do — or how planning shapes your community? A planner’s job is to work with residents and elected officials to guide the layout of an entire community or region.
As planners, we know that great communities don't "just happen." But we also know that planners work with a host of community members to generate the ideas and energy to make communities where people thrive.
Celebrating Planners
To highlight the great work students, planners, and partners are doing across the state, we recognize our students and celebrate great plans and planners from across New Mexico.
Connecting with Planners
There are number of opportunities to meet planners throughout New Mexico, including APA NM events and our annual conference, and other organizations. This includes the Urban Land Institute (ULI), which has a New Mexico chapter.
APA NM collaborates with the University of New Mexico Community & Regional Planning program through events to support planning students as they learn and grow. APA NM + UNM cohost events including resume workshops, poster presentations, and social and networking gatherings.
UNM is also home to the Indigenous Design + Planning Institute (IDPI), which uses culture and identity to inform community development as a tier-2 research center at UNM, bringing together academic programs, professional planning, and tribal technical assistance.
